2003 Feature Artist:
Mitchell Tolle
Chautauqua Welcomes Mitchell Tolle Back to Columbus
The featured artist at this year's Chautauqua of the Arts is certainly no stranger to the Chautauqua of the Arts nor the residents and art lovers in Columbus,Indiana. When Jim and Dixie McDonough did the very first Chautauqua here in 1993, Mitchell and his family came and brought his watercolors, drawings, and limited edition prints. That year he unveiled the first of what would become a series of very popular award-winning posters which have come to symbolize the Columbus Chautauqua of the Arts.
Mitchell is a Kentucky native who has lived and worked in Berea, Kentucky for more than 30 years. Berea is widely known as a center for arts and crafts. He and his wife Linda have owned and operated a gallery there for 23 years. The gallery, which carries only his work, has seen visitors from 80 countries. The artist, who paints primarily in watercolor, has painted a U.S. president, published two books about his art, and receives more than 1000 invitations each year to speak.
"Outdoor shows played such an important role in the early development of my career and reputation," Mitchell says. "Of all the shows we attended, and there were many, no one could put on a high quality show like the McDonoughs. Even though I don't do outdoor shows any more, when they ask, I always hesitate and consider it. We are so excited to be coming to Chautauqua."
"My wife, Linda, will be there. Also, my son, Mitchell, Jr. will be with us. After that, who knows what family members and friends we may persuade to join us. We are expecting beautiful weather, thousands of attendees and lots of fun seeing old friends once again."
"I have done another poster. This will be my fourth Chautauqua poster. I think you'll like it."
